The A Team

AMD and ATi have joined forces today:

On July 24, 2006, AMD and ATI announced a plan to join forces, in a transaction that will combine AMD’s technology leadership in microprocessors with ATI’s strengths in graphics, chipsets and consumer electronics. The result is a processing powerhouse: a new competitor, better equipped to drive growth, innovation and choice for its customers in commercial and mobile computing segments and in rapidly-growing consumer electronics segments. The transaction, valued at US $5.4 billion, is expected to close in Q4 2006 subject to approval by ATI shareholders, court approval, regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

This truely is a huge event, both companies are usually favored by gamers so really are going to give their competitors a run for their money. Watch out nVidia and Intel! (ug think if they united!)

Games Addiction in Progress

I’m addicted to Dawn of War (Warhammer 40k RTS) again and Ian is addicted to Guildwars, we’re both going to write reviews of the games once we get over it, and once we settle more back into school after exam leave (which was wisely spent starting this site).

In hardware news, the Intel Core Duo 2 processor has been released for the LGA775 socket. Results look good, its faster than the AMD FX-62 and costs a small fraction. Also the Geforce 7950 X2 has been unleased which I previewed earlier.

In gaming, a few new games are being released soon that should be highlighted: First, Titan Quest from the co-creator of Age of Empires, Brian Sullivan. Seems to be another singleplayer RPG to consume time lately. Also Prey is coming out next month and, while sounding odd, looks technically sound. (something about a Cherokee Indian getting into big portals and loads of magic etc)

Well thats it, tune in later!

Et tu Physics?

Well physics, like graphics before it, is demanding its own PCI slot now. The questions is, will the sudden transformation of computer gaming happen again as it did with the invention of Voodoo cards? Will we sell our souls every few months for the latest trip of physics heaven like we do graphics?

Geforce 7950 Released

Well the day of the apocolypse came and the devil didn't, so obviously this beasted scared him away! The latest graphics card from Nvidia has been released today, featuring a new VPU more powerful than previously, correction, 2 new VPU's! Nvidia appears to be making a clear grap at the "most powerful graphics" position that had belong to ATi previously with its X1900XTX. ATi apparently is hoping there will not be many of these produced, but Nvidia seems to be making plenty, and selling them cheaply – for £350 plus vat. Nvidia claims the new card is capable of 32x AA and resolutions of 2650×1600.

Even if you're not planning of getting one of these, its still good news because it means other card prices will plummet.

Console Killed the PC Star?

Will Consoles kill PC gaming? I’ve seen this words on the lips of hundreds of journalists and an infinite number of gamers over the past few months as Microsoft and Sony flash their new consoles which both appear to have specs similar to the mainframe computers at NASA. Will PC gamers be tempted to Xbox Live and the shiny graphics? Have computers been literally owned? Well let’s see…
